Quoth the Raven...

monsteralice and I went to see Nevermore last night at the Signature Theater.

Absolutely amazing. A musical portrait of Poe painted using his verse and short stories. It's an exploration of his deliberate otherness and how women shaped his life and affected his self-destruction. It was intense (and often intensely sexual); haunting, wrenching, and utterly moving. When they kicked off with these lines:

"Lo! 'tis a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres."

Chills shot up and down my spine. His poem Alone was the central text, but they skilfully wove parts of many others though the work, climaxing with The Raven, words spiraling around the poet as he wrote himself out of redemption and into destruction. One reviewer said that the actors "sing as if pursued by demons", and that's a pretty apt description. The music is romantic and powerful, and the set is a no-holds-barred Goreyesque otherworld.

It's up 'til March 5th. See it... "for the love of God, Montressor."

EDIT: I'm going to go see it again with ravenrose and mohnkern on 3/2. There are still tix available if anyone else wants to join us...

The only dates available are tonight, and march dates, mostly during Intercon.

Don't suppose you'd want to see it agian on Thurday march 2nd? After all, I figured you might be coming up to our place...

That sounds really cool!

(...alas, it also sounds quite far away.)
