"When Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating..."
Fifty-one years ago today, according to my Tolkien calendar, The Fellowship of the Ring was first published.

Here's to the Professor!

One of my favorite works, no doubt.

It shares with a small subset of works (Dune is another one) the the power to give you a slightly different story each time you read it.

I re-read it again this year and aspects of the story that passed unnoticed before were revealed. Truly the work that launched a genre.

The Road goes ever on and on...

Will have to raise a glass to him tonight!

With regard to the whol 1948 Signals crew, I should like to quote the Old Hobbit:

"I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

Only the Professor could write such a wonderfully witty line as that.

:lights a pipe (filled with Old Toby, of course!), in his honour:

Fellowship of the Pants was better, but remained unpublished due to decency concerns.
