better late than never
[this had to perk for awhile, plus I was on vacation and working on my novel]

Space Ship One

This thrill bursts past the bounds of words,
Blurs the visible world with joy's tears,
Resonates backwards down the secret core
Of my dreams, lightning-flashes flickering
On artifacts lovingly deep-cradled in memory:
A space-helmet, get-well gift long ago;
That one small step, grainy image in the wee hours;
Wonder piled on wonder as our faithful servants
Voyaged the solar system, opening it to our eyes;
Horror at the disastrous sigils traced in smoke,
Shuttles falling fragmented from the looming sky.
This is but another step, smaller still, but yet
That engraving from Flammarion wells up-
The traveler, breaking through the known sky,
Shoulder-deep in a realm of astonishment-
And I can hope that this is but the first foot
Placed upon a long road, leading west of Moon
And east of Sun, winding under the stars.
