Found this while looking for quotes on civic education and involvement:

“People talk about the middle of the road as though it were unacceptable. Actually, all human problems, excepting morals, come into the gray areas. Things are not all black and white. Personally, I would excise "excepting morals" from the above... a lot of questions of morality have surprising nuances.

Indeed, indeed. Not happy with his performance on civil rights but it may have been too much to expect.

For the most part, he's absolutely right. There are, however, times when there can be no real compromise - but those times are made obvious by their special circumstances.
