mp3 player (not an iPod) suggestions

I'm probably going to be in the market for a new mp3 player (not an iPod) soon. I currently have a 30gb Creative Zen Extra, but it's giving signs that it may not be long for this world.

I wouldn't mind staying with Creative, but their current line appears to have a really sucky software interface... and it's hard to tell if there's a cheap or free 3rd-party interface out there.

I want to get a player that is not an iPod, has 30+ GB capacity, is relatively easy to use and not fragile. Or if you can recommend a 3rd-party interface that works with the current Creative line, that would be cool, too.

Thanks in advance...

Much as I like my Ipod, I doubt I'll ever use it again except for game SFX. My Droid has about as much memory, and has itunes and other MP3 support.

The thought here is that if you're anywhere *near* a phone upgrade, rolling your phone upgrade into your Mp3 player upgrade may kill two birds with one phone.

Most of the newer smartphones are decent to good MP3 and video players.

I have to agree here. My droid can handle a 32GB smart card. That's more than all my music on my player so far. And it has a standard rca plug to boot.

I currently have a zune and I gotta say that I hate the zune pc software pretty much a lot.

Thanks for the heads up on the Zune s/w.

Thanks, but I'm nowhere near a phone upgrade and am studiously avoiding a smartphone anyway. ;-)

I had the same issue when my creative zen software on my mp3 player crashed. When I searched around I couldn't find anything remotely comparable except an Ipod, especially when it comes to gig size. For now I'm just using my smart phone as a music player even though it only carries 7 gigs. If you are looking at this as a long term investment and willing to shell out the bucks, the best mps player reviews I've come across are for the Sony X-Series Walkman (32GB). It has a good computer interface and is pretty versatile.

Good luck.

The Walkman X looks good but I think it's out of my price range.

It looks like you may be able to stick a 16mb SD card in the latest model, so that makes it a contender...

Is that just a space issue, or a technical problem?

I'm honestly OK with the 30gb that my current player has...

Thanks for the note, though...
