I'm not really a poet either, but I remember reading that in Japan, haiku were used as a direct form of communication. Two old Japanese sat side by side, drinking tea in silence and forming haiku. When one was ready, he turned to the other and recited his haiku. The other old man then thought of a response (in haiku), and so it went. I always thought that was such a cool idea.

Apparently, short poems (not necessarily haiku) were also used as a mildly competitive art form (and a method of flirting) in Japan. Of course, my source for this is mainly Shogun, so... ;-)
