thirty days hath... well, *every* month should, IMHO
solstice

intercalary - adjective: added or having an addition to make the calender year correspond to the solar year

The days between Christmas and New years always seem a little strange to me, like they're not really part of the year, like they're caught out of time. Not many people in the office, not much work being done; holiday decorations are still up and holiday things still happening, but without a lot of the anticipation (and stress) that hangs over the run-up to the 25th.

I'd like to rationalize our calendar- the current mess of 30 and 31 day months (not to mention poor February) just makes no sense to me. How about making the months all 30 days, with a five-day period (six days in leap years) that would make up the proper number of days, yet not be in a month at all? Those five days would be special- times of feasting and celebration.

It's a model that's been used in societies as widely separated as Ancient Egypt and the Maya. The Heathen Anglo-Saxons may have done something similar (Tolkien used it as a model for the calendar he invented for the Hobbits to use).

I know, never going to happen. It would play merry hell with all kinds of record-keeping, etc. People are used to the way things are. So I'll just file this in the "if I ruled the world" folder.

i am a big fan of the Lunar calendar. it likes up with a bunch of different cycles. of course it requires the existence of a leap MONTH :)

I like what the Maya did. They had all kinds of different calendars that were linked up in a truly baroque fashion- solar, lunar, a 52-year cycle, a count of days, a Venus cycle, etc...

a little... complex for every day use :)

it required specialists...

Well, you could always move to Israel... :-)

like they're caught out of time.
A good way to put it - I agree. If I rule the world before you get to, I'll add that to the list. :)

Should we call the 5 (or 6) day time "Festivus"?

ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

those who partake of that path can, certainly.

At the very minimum we should throw a couple of days into Feb to bring it up to thirty and shuffle the 31 day months around the calendar. Maybe 4 31 day months and a one day out of month holiday.

I think the Vilani did something close to this in original Traveller, only they don't have months so they have 52 weeks and one holiday.

If we kept the holiday out of the week as well everything should land on the same weekday every year.

If you ruled the world, things wouldn't suck so much.
