If you live within striking distance of DC, and you haven't seen the < a href="http://events.nationalgeographic.com/events/exhibits/2011/10/29/anglo-saxon-hoard/">Anglo-Saxon Hoard exhibit</a> at the National Geographic museum... go! It's well worth it.

monsteralice and I went today and we were very impressed. Some of the pieces are breathtaking, and the workmanship is just amazing- especially if you consider that the crafters worked with hand and hand-powered tools, no magnification, and with natural light at best... using wire that was often 1/2 - 1/3 mm in diameter!

The exhibit has a top-notch A/V and computer component, great signage and art, a lot of historical context, information on conservation, etc. Only about 5% of the Hoard has been conserved and documented... who knows what they'll find? Very exciting.

Karl and I are going on Valentine's Day. *grins*

I saw it in December and was amazed at how they cut the garnets for the inlay and enamel work. Incredible!
