1:35PM - [DC-Area folks] SOME "Empty Bowls" fundraiser
Sorry about the late notice on this-
SOME (So Others Might Eat) is a DC-area charity that helps the poor and homeless. They're good people and they do good work- direct and compassionate aid, with zero BS and very little overhead.
On March 6, from 6:00-9:00 PM, they will be holding their annual "Empty Bowls" event at St. Charles Catholic Church in Arlington, VA*. The way this works: for a $20 donation at the door, you choose a bowl (handmade by a local artisan) to fill with soup. After you're finished eating, the bowl is yours to keep.
monsteralice and I are planning on going.

* IIRC, they have plenty of parking and are close to the Clarendon Metro stop.

Others have posted about this already, but I have to add in... D&D was a major factor in me keeping my balance and sanity (and possibly my life) during the hell that was high school. It was my "gateway drug" for fandom, medieval recreation, LARPing, Paganism... it led to some of my first friendships with people who actually "got" me on any level whatsoever. It's quite possible that, without those influences, I never would have met monsteralice.
Because of the recommendations in the back of the AD&D DM's guide, I discovered Jack Vance, Tim Powers, John Bellairs, and a number of other favorite authors. I also discovered Isaac Bonewits' book "Real Magic", which quite literally changed my life.
I still remember my first D&D game- it was at summer camp in 8th grade... It was silly- there was something about a banana that fired a magic missile when you peeled it, the GM did goofy voices for the monsters, etc. It wasn't a very good game... but it was like turning on a switch in my head... it lit up my world.
3:43PM - one of the many reasons i love monsteralice
evcelt: Did you buy the sandpaper you needed?
monsteralice: Yep.
e: But not sandpipers?
m: I got two of those, too! They're in the car.
e: Be careful- they might poop all over it.
m: No, they won't- they're in a plastic bag.
e: But they'll suffocate!
m: No!
e: Unless you poked holes in the bag.
m: I didn't...
e: But I bet they did!
m: ::giggles madly::
