Boneshaker, by Cherie Priest

A gritty steampunk novel set in Seattle, in a world where the Civil War grinds on into 1880. Airships, zombies, deadly gas, and weird science gadgets frame the plot, which involves a mother looking for a son who's looking for his identity. Both of them get caught up in the legacy of her past, and in events that they can't control. A real ripping yarn, and one with a heart. Highly recommended.

Oh, excellent news! I have been looking at this one as high on my list of "maybe I'll read that". Good to hear a positive report on it.
